Goals and Objectives

The goal of the internship is to expose the intern to sound exercise programs that focus on exercise for health benefits and deal with various populations and disease processes such as:

  • Sedentary

  • Arthritis

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Hypertension

  • Cancer

  • Apparently healthy

  • Obese

  • Osteoporosis

  • Cardiac patients

  • Pulmonary patients

  • Stroke patients

Estes ProActive Fitness strives for interns to experience how:

  • To utilize exercise for general health and wellness.

  • To utilize exercise for therapy and rehabilitation.

  • To make exercise a lifestyle for clients.

  • To make exercise convenient and effective.

  • To promote health benefits to a variety of populations.

  • To properly design and supervise personal exercise programs for individuals with various health conditions.

  • To professionally operate a fitness, wellness and rehabilitation facility.

Intern Dress Code

Interns are expected to always dress in a clean and professional manner. Dress code policies include:

  • Shirts should have a collar and be tucked in, no midriff shirts.

  • Slacks and khaki pants are recommended, jeans are not acceptable.

  • All pants should be free of rips, holes and tears.

  • Shorts must be of professional length, mid-thigh at least and not to exceed the knees.

  • Exercise clothing such as tight fitting spandex is not acceptable.

  • Hair and hygiene must be kept neat, clean and manageable.

  • Interns are expected to be cleanly shaven.

  • Comfortable shoes, such as running shoes, are recommended, however no open-toe shoes, sandals or beat-up shoes.

  • No gum chewing is allowed.

  • Pierced ears are the only visible body piercing allowed while working.

Intern Projects

Interns will be responsible for various projects throughout the semester. Some include: bulletin boards, college required projects and papers, along with performing body composition measurements and balance testing

Intern Requirements

  • Interns should be currently enrolled in an accredited university program pursuing a bachelors degree in an exercise science related field.

  • Interns receiving credit hours for the internship, will be given priority.

  • Interns should have basic core knowledge of exercise science content such as exercise physiology, anatomy and exercise prescription.

  • Internships last an entire semester in duration, commonly 14-17 weeks. Interns are expected to stay the duration of the scheduled internship.

  • Interns need to send a completed intern application with a cover letter, resume and one letter of recommendation.

  • Interns are accepted on a rolling basis.

Intern Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision to exercise clientele.

  • Develop exercise prescriptions for various populations.

  • Carryout the opening, closing and everyday running procedures of daily clinic operations.

  • Operate the lumbar and cervical extension therapy machines.

  • Assist physical therapists.

  • Lead senior exercise classes.

  • Maintain a professional appearance, behavior and attitude.

  • Maintain high-quality customer service.

  • Maintain and exhibit a healthy lifestyle and serve as a role model to clients.

  • To complete intern assignments.

Apply for Internship

Internships are occasionally available on short notice due to possible unfilled positions or other extenuating circumstances. Please call about availability if wishing to apply past the dates listed above.

Interns should have current CPR and First Aid certifications that last through the scheduled internship dates. Attach a copy of current certifications with the intern application.

Interns need to provide all pertinent college internship information to the Estes ProActive Fitness internship supervisor.

Interns need to carry liability insurance. Often, interns are covered under university programs as a registered student. Contact the university internship supervisor/coordinator about details of liability coverage.

Interns need to be friendly, self-motivated and enthusiastic about working with people. Interns must possess good human relation and communication skills and be capable of maintaining a mature professional relationship with clients and staff of various ages.
